Wrexham Tour
Details
We will be travelling to Wrexham to visit two chapels that were very much part of the 1904 Welsh revival, and taking in some additional interesting sites during the day. Please note that the map only shows the approximate route that will be taken on the day of the tour. (It’s quite difficult to master the art of adding routes to individually created maps on Google Maps, but we’ve done the best we can!)
Rhosllanerchrugog
Our main destination for this tour is a large village just outside Wrexham. It is known as one of the centres of the Welsh Revival of 1904-05, where a visiting Baptist preacher, R.B.Jones held a campaign in Penuel Baptist Chapel in November 1904.
According to UK Wells, “One commentator said that the town was ‘ablaze and the converts number 100 already’. By March 1905 the converts in the area were numbered at 2,267. By the end of 1905, the town had changed. Prayer meetings were being held in the coal mines, family feuds were settled and drinking declined.”
Other meetings were held at Bethlehem Welsh Independent Chapel, which is a few streets away from Penuel Baptist. We will be visiting both these chapels on our tour. (Access to the inside of the buildings may not be possible due to local restrictions and limitations.)
Other Locations Visited
- All Saint’s Church, Gresford (our first short stop on the way to Rhosllanerchrugog).
- Valle Crucis Abbey, Llangollen. We will only be driving past this location, as there is very little opportunity to stop in the coach.
- Dyfnog’s Church, Llanrhaeadr. This is our last stop to visit the church and St. Dyfnog’s well behind the church.
- Lunch at Dobbies Garden Centre, Moreton Park, after our visiting our main destination at Rhosllanerchrugog. After lunch we head towards Llangollen and on to Llanrhaeadr.
Key Points
- Key locations for the 1904-05 Welsh Revival.
- Visit the site of one of the Seven Wonders of Wales!
- View the last Cistercian monastery to be built in Wales.
- Visit an ancient healing well from the 6th or 7th century.
Other Points to Consider
- At some locations there may be some walking required over short distances and occasionally uneven terrain.
- Please consider our Welsh weather and dress accordingly!
- Access to all sites visited may be subject to local restrictions and limitations beyond our control.
We had such a blessed time on this tour. It was wonderful to see 35 of us hungry for revival, praying on the bus, in the streets, worshiping in the chapels, praying that God would unblock the wells …
